BAFTA’s Rising Star Award Nominees Revealed

Today (January 7), the five nominees for the 2025 edition BAFTA The EE Rising Star Awards, which celebrate their 20th anniversary this year, were announced at a press conference at the Savoy Hotel in London.
Hosted by a film critic/radio host Ali Plumb and actor Jack O’Connell, the nominees are five actors who have each demonstrated their “a remarkable cinematic talent over the past year, having captured the imagination of audiences and the film industry”.
The artists in the running for this year’s award are as follows…
Marisa Abela
Having gained a lot of attention for his roles in projects such as HBO’s Industry and biographical thriller Rogue Agentin 2024, Marisa Abela received critical acclaim and acclaim for her portrayal of Amy Winehouse in Sam Taylor Johnson’s film. Back to black.
Jharrel Jerome
Acclaimed American actor and rapper Jharrel Jerome made her on-screen debut in 2016, in the Academy Award-winning film Moonlight, while his 2019 performance in When they see us earned him a Primetime Emmy Award, as well as an NAACP Image Award.
He recently appeared on our screens as the protagonist of the biopic Unstoppable. Starring alongside Jennifer Lopez and Don Cheadle, the biographical sports drama sees Jharrel play Anthony Robles, born without a leg and determined to pursue his dream of becoming a wrestler.
David Johnson
British actor David Jonsson rose to fame thanks to his performances in Industry, and his film debut in Rye lanewhich received critical acclaim. More recently he starred in Extraterrestrial: Romulus – a sci-fi horror film that follows a group of space colonizers as they come face-to-face with the most terrifying life form in the universe while searching the depths of a station abandoned space.
Mikey Madison
Mikey Madison can currently be seen in Sean Baker’s award season-contending comedy-drama. Anora. The film, which won the Palme d’Or at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, follows a young sex worker from Brooklyn whose life takes an unexpected turn when she impulsively meets and marries the son of a Russian oligarch.
Nabhaan Rizwan
Nabhaan Rizwan made his on-screen debut with the lead role in the BBC thriller Informantwhich earned him the Breakthrough Award at the RTS Awards. His last role in the British independent film, In camerasees Rizwan play Aden, a young actor finds himself in a cycle of nightmarish auditions. After being rejected several times, he decides to find a role to play.

Celebrating its twentieth anniversary, the EE Rising Star Award is the only category of the EE BAFTA Film Awards voted for by the British public.
Previous winners include Mia McKenna-Bruce, Emma Mackey, Lashana Lynch, Bukky Bakray, Micheal Ward, Letitia Wright, James McAvoy, Daniel Kaluuya, John Boyega and Tom Hardy.
Voting is now open to ee.co.uk/BAFTA and the winner will be announced at the EE BAFTA Film Awards 2025.
The ceremony will take place at the Royal Festival Hall at the Southbank Center on Sunday February 16 and will be broadcast on BBC One and iPlayer in the UK, as well as on BritBox International in North America, the Nordics and Australia.
