One of the most beloved romantic comedies of all time, “When Harry Met Sally…” has been dubbed by many as “When Harry Met Sally.” “excellent” and “ultimate” New Year’s Eve movie. The film places New Year’s at the center of the story and even climaxes (pun much intended) the holiday as Billy Crystal delivers the pivotal monologue that determines whether Harry and Sally (Meg Ryan) will have their happily ever after.

The Great Gatsby (2013)

Although party scenes don’t happen exclusively on New Year’s, the glitzy soirees of the rich and famous will make you wish you had friends like Jay Gatsby – or Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire. Anyone who wants the 1920s to be more like the 1920s will enjoy this wild and raucous fun.

This adorable romantic comedy begins and ends on New Year’s Day, and is a great example of heading into 2025 with a clean slate. There’s no better ship than friendship, and nothing can top the sight of Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) running alongside Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) after she received a late-night call from a lonely Miranda who was in distress after spending New Year’s. “Alone.” With Chinese food.” In her ridiculously preposterous fur coat and boots, Carrie rushes to Miranda’s apartment so that neither of them will be alone at midnight.

There’s no better tear-jerking movie to watch on New Year’s Eve than this one featuring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. The scene in which Hanks’ character imagines a touching conversation with his late wife on New Year’s Eve will especially give you all the feels as 2024 comes to a close.

This is another movie that follows a group of best friends and begins and ends on New Year’s. Watching these friends go through life’s ups and downs will make you cheer for them – especially Angela Bassett’s character after she sets her husband’s car on fire because he cheated on her.

Set on New Year’s Eve at a hotel in Hollywood, California, this dark comedy follows a down-on-his-luck butler (Tim Roth) who encounters one troubled guest and one problem after another. The film will leave you laughing and cringing at every turn with a cast including Madonna, Jennifer Beals, Marisa Tomei and Antonio Banderas.

The Godfather Part II (1974)

“The Godfather Part II” is to New Year’s Eve what “Die Hard” is to Christmas. The second film in the trilogy and widely considered one of the greatest films of all time, “The Godfather Part II” also contains one of the most famous scenes in cinematic history, filmed at a 1958 New Year’s Eve party in Cuba. Fredo’s “kiss of death” sets the rest of the film in motion – and arguably seals Michael Corleone’s fate, making this a perfect movie to watch for those feeling a little salty in 2019.
