Various artwork has been removed to restore calm in the exhibition

Athens National Exhibition removed the artwork of the artist Christoforus Katsadiots, with his approval, in an attempt to defuse the tensions in the wake of a violent attack several days ago by the very conservative deputy who claimed that the pieces were offensive to the Orthodox Christianity.

The controversy erupted last Monday when the right -wing MP Nikolaos Papadubulus stormed the exhibition, broke the case of the show, and was removed four religious paintings by Katsadiots, which led to her rowing. His actions raised disturbances outside the exhibition during the past week.

On Wednesday, tensions escalated more, as extremist demonstrators clashed with cultural workers with a peaceful demonstration in defending artistic freedom.

In a statement, the national exhibition said that it removed Katsadiotis to ensure the safety of the institution, its employees, visitors and artworks, while also seeking to restore regular operations.
