The story of H. Nesbitt, 1902 Five children and He was It was first broadcast on the BBC in 1951. In this version, Psammead was played by a young boy (Thomas More) who imitated the voice of actor Richard Warner.

Forty years later, this 1991 remake featured a sophisticated Psammed puppet made by the BBC’s special effects department and managed by Francis Wright.

Five children – Cyril (Simon Goodwin), Anthea (Nicole Mowatt), Robert (Charles Richards), Jane (Tamzin Udas), and their baby brother known as “The Lamb” (Louis Wilson and Alexander Wilson) – play in a small house. sand pit when they encounter a mysterious and angry creature – the Psammed – a sand fairy who is thousands of years old and has the power to grant wishes.

Psammed convinces the children to share only one wish each day between them, with the warning that the wishes will turn to stone at sunset.

All desires go comically wrong. Their first wish is to be beautiful, and when that backfires, they ask to become wealthy “beyond the dreams of greed.” While the children are eager to spend their gold, none of the local shopkeepers will accept it.

The next day, Anthea wants wings, but as the sun sets, the children find themselves stuck on top of a church tower with no way down.

Another wish turns their house into a castle (but fortunately, Martha fails to notice this).

After fending off the bully, Robert wants to grow bigger and become a giant. The other kids make the best of the situation and display it at a local coin carnival.

The children’s baby brother, Aries, is the victim of two desires gone awry. In one, the children are upset about taking care of their brother and wish someone else would want him, leading to a situation in which they must fend off kidnappers and gypsies.

Later, they wish the child to grow faster, causing him to grow up all at once into a selfish, arrogant young man who promptly leaves them all behind.

Psammed eventually disappears, leaving the children to clean up the massive mess before their mother returns home.

The series was released in the United States as Sand fairy.
