More often than not, Cho uses the new medium to add meaningful additions to the story. Not all of them land. The film’s final big scene, in particular, suffers from this weird kind of start-and-stop combination with some unnecessary big scenes that undermine the emotional catharsis of the big moment. That’s the nature of stretching a nearly three-hour musical into two films, even with a natural intermission. Overall, adding breathing space to songs and scenes worked for the most part. It’s going to take more than just extra fluff to bring the film down.

David can’t understand why Benjy hasn’t grown up in all the ways David did. Benjy can’t admit that he feels left behind. All of this is set against the backdrop of an effective and meticulously handled Holocaust tour that makes everyone in the tour group react in different, profound and challenging ways.
