JUXTAPOZ Magazine – Agnieszka Nienartowicz: Echoes @ nicodim, nyc

reverberation It is meditation. The exhibition invites us to an area where the symbols are frequented through time and develop in unexpected ways. Religious icons and typical narratives bear in the human soul, and find embodiment in the form of tattoos and wounds, leaving a mark on the body and spirit. The tattoo was once the symbols of culture and identity, but here, they are transferred to live echoes. These signs carry stories but are also reinstitated in a new light, and the question is asked: What happens when the sacred is redefined?

in Church (2024), the woman’s back becomes the location of the transformation. Black black Madonna in the Middle Ages, decorated with tapes like Polish chapels on the side of the road, protruding on the woman’s body, distorting many scratches in her skin. This sacred image, which is limited once on a wooden plate, is combined with meat into a calm rebellion. Condolence (2024) This exploration deepens to embody and re -invention. A face staring outside, and the sad after calm expression is combined with a stream of tears on her face. The past does not appear in these works. It breaks and resists stillness.

The artist provides faces and bodies with excessive realistic details and precision. These numbers are not only present and real but more than the reality itself – an intense and increased presence. As Baudrillard is also suggested, realism does not reflect reality, but instead it creates its “improved” version that exceeds reality. Nienartowicz characters occupy this space. They become pregnant with pictures that formed cultural and religious awareness for several centuries, however their meaning is reinterpreted. It turned into a tattoo, historical artwork is removed from its original context, giving them a new context. In this way, the artist raises the issue of what will remain the sacred when he is placed in the vulgar context of tattoos. These living symbols create a clear tension, which raises a dialogue between the image and its symbolic meaning, the past and the present, and the body’s narration.
