This ITV comedy series is from the pen Men behaving badly Writer Simon Nye originated from a successful one-off pilot titled True Love, which aired in February 1996, with former monitoring and Stay lucky The film stars Emma Rae as Donna, a sour-tongued nurse and mother of two, and Philip Glenister as her charming husband, Phil, a taxi driver.

When the full series premiered in May 1997, Donna had given Phil the push and was now juggling work at St. Mark’s Hospital, home life with her beloved but difficult daughters Shirley (Vicky Connett) and Rhiannon (Amanda Riley), and a complicated love life. Which included motorcycle paramedic Laurie Johnson (Minder star Gary Webster) – who was more interested in sleeping in the laundry room than playing happy families – and the kind but reluctant doctor Roger Graham (Hamish Clarke), who treated her like a rare kind of butterfly.

Next door, Marina (Elizabeth Berrington) and her self-satisfied husband and politically correct city planner Alan (Tony Robinson) are ready with mint tea, emergency babysitting and annoyingly sensible advice. And best friend and fellow nurse, Bridget (Claire Perkins), is always on hand to offer some earthy advice.

Donna’s problems were wide-ranging: she had no money, her career was going nowhere, her mouth was as big as the Mersey Tunnel, and she couldn’t resist being rude to her bosses.

She didn’t know which man she liked best, and her friends got a little involved in the screening process.

One daughter wanted to follow in Mother Teresa’s footsteps, and the other drank vodka.

Her useless ex-husband – and his attractive new girlfriend Jill (Nicola Stephenson) – have tried to interfere in her life.

Her washing machine was often on the blink of an eye.

Granada’s television comedy was varied – and certainly not the funniest in the box – but it attracted a regular audience which maintained it through three series.
