Dandy in Aspic, A (1968) – Nostalgia Central

British agent Alexander Eberlin (Laurence Harvey) – a ruthless agent with a reputation for being a dandy – is tasked with tracking down and killing a Russian assassin known as “Krasnevin.”

Only the Russian-born Eberlein knows that Krasnevin is actually himself. He has worked as a double agent for 18 years in England and is desperate to return to his home country, but the Russians consider him too valuable in his current position.

He is accompanied on his mission by Gatiss (Tom Courtenay), an unfeeling and cruel young man and one of the top assassins in British intelligence.

Eberlein is relieved that Krasnevin is believed to be Pavel (Per Oscarsson), the Russian network’s contact in London. But when he tries to warn him about it, Pavel is killed – apparently by his Russian employers.

Eberlin and Gatiss travel to Berlin, where Eberlin tries to extricate himself from an increasingly desperate situation. He tried repeatedly to enter the eastern sector (and safety) but was unsuccessful.

He meets a beautiful young photographer named Caroline (Mia Farrow), who previously tried to date him in London but was rejected. Now, they are drawn into an affair.

Eberlin eventually discovers that the British knew his true identity all along (they were the ones who killed Pavel), and Gatiss runs him over with his car. Eberlein shot Gattis through the windshield before dying himself. . .

Peter Cook provides clever comic relief as a British agent named Prentiss, who is more ruthless and cold-blooded than he appears.

Director Anthony Mann died of a heart attack in his hotel room in Berlin during production, and Lawrence Harvey stepped in to finish directing the film.

Based on Derek Marlowe’s novel of the same name.
